About Shopping

Data from the World Bank for 2003 uncovers that of all products consumed, 81.5% of them were consumed by people in high income countries, while low income countries consume only 3.6%. Meanwhile, of the products consumed, beef and sugar, once considered luxuries, are now market staples. In fact, many luxuries have now become necessities in a rapidly growing world market.

These are only a few ways to consider the effects of consumerism and shopping. "Shopping: A century or Art and Consumer Culture," on display from May to August in 2006, addresses theses issues through the work of artists, each one using unique mediums to describe the relationship between art, consumerism and consumers. Ultimately, their perspective is as unique as the techniques they use to convey them.
